Sf In April - Locals Advice

This really belongs in the travelers forum, but since the band is chillin' it hasn't heated up yet and I need to get to bookin'. Have never been to SF and want to hit those April shows at the Regency with my gorgeous wife (20th anniv. trip). I have been looking around Union Square East. Seems like I can find a room for around $100/night that is pretty decent. Looks like 7-9 blocks from the Regency. Is this the area to look? Since it will be a romantic escape (can't believe I just said that), I'd like to avoid getting mugged and beat up if at all possible. Areas to definitely avoid? I understand public trans is abundant. Thank you in advance for your tips and advice.

I'm not local to SF- but I know a little bit about the city.... you probably want to avoid the area known as the tenderloin...its right around the area of the Regency (not sure if the Regency is actually considered in the tenderloin) but the Great American music hall certainly is.... I actually don't find it all that bad during the day...but I wouldn't want to be walking around there alone at night.

And congratulations on your anniversary!

another note- Lookyloo usually puts together a hotel DSO for the SF runs....and its usually at the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway which is just a block or two from the Regency. I can't say its a "romantic" getaway hotel- but I think last year the rate was like 79 bucks and its not too bad of a Holiday Inn. There are also some nice boutique hotels around there too (I know Kimpton has a couple). I use TripAdvisor a lot to find hotel reviews....

My wife took my daughter to a night out in the city last weekend. They stayed at the Sir Francis Drake, a block off Union Square and a really cool hotel for $99. Regular rates are $199. If you can get that same deal it would be a fun choice. A short cab ride to the venue, and it's right in the heart of the city.

Check it out!

The Holiday Inn Golden Gateway is about 4 blocks from the Regency so that is super convenient. Ask for a corner room and though not quaint, the view can be very nice! As stated above, Union Square is not too far and home to several great little hotels (Serrano, Monaco, California, Prescott, Sir Francis Drake etc) and Nob Hill is home to the Fairmont, Huntington, Ritz-Carlton and Mark Hopkins Intercontinental. All a quick cab away from the venue! Book early and enjoy!
