Furthur Hammerstein Night One Setlist

They got a Rueben & Cherise. Sweet. Looks like Bob is mucking up the works quite a bit unfortunately. I wish he would just let John do his thing. Egos are tough to crack I guess. I heard a Ratdog version of Franklin's Tower this morning on Sirius. The song was butchered by Bob's interpretation of the vocals. It's clear he doesn't care what the fans want. Anyway, I digress.

I think that what it will take for Bobby to give up some of those Jerry tunes is for him to somehow rediscover other songs he used to love to sing. Dig deep for some of that Dylan stuff maybe. It's just that he's become accustomed to playing/singing these other songs over the last 15 years or so, changing the arrangements to some, etc. Maybe comfort-level as much as ego...

As time goes by with this band, they will probably shift things around a bit hopefully, and we'll begin to hear arrangements that are a little less 'Rat-doggy'...

I doubt they will move backwards with any of it though. It's possible though after hearing that Let It Grow from Oakland. Sounded as if it were '88.

I'm just gonna go into this with an open mind and try not to forget what a rare opportunity it is to see these guys again like this...

I agree that this iteration has massive potential. I just don't think Bob should inject himself into songs that John K has nailed down and sings with such conviction. John is not Jerry. We all know that and that's not what I'm looking for personally. Basically it comes down to the fact that the Garcia/Hunter songs sound better, IMO, when sung by someone, anyone in the arrangement, not style, that Jerry provided. I wouldn't really care if Bob sang them in that manner, but his interpretations are just off the wall. His vocal arrangement drastically alters the beauty and fluidity of those tunes. His use of this choppy cadence to make the songs more to his liking just doesn't do it for me. I'll bet that if you asked the band you would get similar responses. It's got to be difficult to play songs you know a certain way with a vocalist who wants to throw the lyrics around as he pleases.

This is just an opinion. I'm sure there are many in my camp and some in the other camp. But this opinion in no way takes away from the excitement I'm feeling to see the band this weekend. Just looking for "a real good time."

i don't think bobby taking the jerry tunes is about ego so much as protection. i may be projecting, but i think they recognize these songs, especially the hunter/garcia tunes, as being sacred. bobby's not going to turn them over until he's sure they're in good hands. i think phil's motivation may be the same. i would guess they would be relieved to fnd someone they can trust. and john is a man of integrity. they're trusting him so much already. (blissful sigh...) thank god phil is able to give his larynx a rest. (we love you phil! but concentrate on your blitzkriegs, please.)

Must we complain of Bobby singing certain songs the whole tour? embrace this.. John with Bob and Phil not to mention Jeff, Jay, and Joe.. I am not trying to do the overly positive "smile, smile, smile" thing, I understand being critical but think of Oakland... in terms of singing and playing this has turned into something great.

this is better then I imagined for the first show.. The setlists are awesome, John is singing songs solo... songs like Rueben & Cherise for that matter. It is a beautiful thing. When Bob sings Days Between do you really think it is about ego? The man has nothing to prove... I think it is quite clear there is an emotional factor when it comes to these things. They know how special John is and wouldn't have created this band out of the blue if that wasn't true.

This show, if anything has gotten me even more excited for Friday than I already was..

If you heard Jackie Green with Phil & Friends sing Standing On The Moon last year at the Sweetwater Station in Larkspur you might not feel that way about "Phil's motivation". It was horribly painful to witness. Almost as if JG had never heard the song before, which was probably just as Phil wanted it to be. No reference point, just make it your own.

No Covers last night...

Interesting....I think that's a mistake..need to mix it up a bit more.....but listening to the tape..

Kadcelick's guitar work is extremely and I mean extremely impressive..

No big suprise..but he is simply a virtuoso guitar player...

If he did not sing a single note..he is by far the best guitar player in this genre to collaborate with Bob and Phil..

And I love them all..Warren, Jimmy, Kimmock...Just think John is better spefically as it relates to improv....

All Furthur shows thus far have included a max of one or so covers. So it seems this is their shtick. And there is certainly no shortage of A-list original material to draw from, so why not?

Huh?...with the Grateful Dead catalog as wide and varied as it is you are bemoaning the fact they didn't play other peoples tunes?

Jeff is MONSTER on the keys...

Yes and I include in this the songs that the Grateful Dead did that were covers, including Dylan, the Beatles, Merle Haggard etc..

Just my opinion..Everyone has one..I'm sure we will see some as time goes on..

I would also like to see something completely out of the box like John throwing in one of his own originals or perhaps a cover that has never been done before.....

And this is shocking but perhaps a new instrumental piece...

I don't know if it's audible on all the sources, but in the one I have, you can hear some guy yelling "NOOOOOOOOO!" when Bobby starts singing "He's Gone."

I personally don't care too much about the "Who Sings What" debate, but that was priceless!
