K i just find some of the hyperbole a bit telling as I said, not the best one I saw that year, let alone post Hampton breakout, no argument there we had a good time with it, though Thanks, John

Why start the exact same thread, Bro? please stop and instead discuss your favorite Donna song or somethin? Happy New Year! DD
-
Heading to Fiesta Bowl now. Go Irish. Happy New Year!
-
Or, one could say that they’re due.
-
This seems like a dare 😇
-
Could be a good thread if it’s own. Although not sure I have any to add to it 🙃

RudeDog, Besides HSF, which we all know is the best way to start a show, what would be your choice after that?
-
Well. Now you’ve sort of upped the ante a bit. 😃 I thought you were perhaps talking just openers still with your previous comments, to which the Rain>Shakedown are probably the strongest. The Jack Straw>Althea in Boston on 9/26 were quite good, too (although not better). But if you want to put it up against all music later that tour, you have not only the Prophet from 9/22/93 to contend with, but also the Standing on the Moon from 9/26. Both of those performances would rate stronger by any reasonable measure. Although clearly these are deep into the shows and therefore, Jerry was all lubed up by then. And having attended those MSG and Boston shows, I would comfortably add OO GDTRFB Morning Dew from 9/20/93, parts of which had Edie enhancing the mood Bucket>Bertha from 9/21 Help/Slip/Frank Bird Song from 9/22 Days Between from 9/24 to the list of songs that were extraordinary that occurred after the Rain>Shakedown>Wang Dang Doodle, CRS from 9/16 that you mention. But before I go, not so fast with the dig on the Dark Star from 9/22. Yes, it was not as well-played as the Estimated that preceded it (a pretty high bar to eclipse), and yes it was not the best Dark Star of the year (I saw three of the four played that year and it was my least favorite), it was by no means a throwaway version if for no other reason than Phil alone. Anyway, fun stuff to rehash (pun intended). Thanks for the Fall 1993 discussion!

A lot to unpack here, John. That was incredible music, no one could question that. But there was some pretty strong music later in that tour. As I know you know. Bold statement, though. Love it!
-
Yes, this is a good opener 😎 Wow
-
That is one helluva honorable mention, John. I’ll just add Promised Land from 8/27/72 to the list so we can get it out of the way, too.
-
Bobby Weir is on line one for you, PG 😂
-
Damn, I’m gonna have to fly to Lexington.
-
Ha, yeah, you ain’t gonna get any arguments on this set 😎

Um, I’d like a redaction of the redaction. The show opens with Shakedown, so we’re already way ahead of the curve. Rooster, Stagger Lee, To Lay Me Fucking Down, and LIG. Then a Foolish, a Dark Star (don’t diminish because of V2, that’s nonsense), and Wharf Rat, and a Lovelight… And we’re looking down our noses at this show?! Picasso does have stupid lyrics, but the music isn’t that bad. Victim is awesome. Not every song can be the Wheel. So as I said, please take back the take back! (I love our annual visit to the McNichols run, Tea 😎, sick shows, Brother)

Greg, you rebel. 😎 First of all, I prefer my Shakedown to open the show, not set 2. But if you were going to break the thread rules (a very serious matter), you could at least hold form. In this case, it would have been to offer some other pairing that almost always opens set 2. But I didn’t include Victim/Foolish for obvious reasons. It’s cool, but it ain’t China/Rider or S/F. And, same as on the Red October, more than one ping could lead to nuclear war. One. Ping. Only.
-
List your (current) preference for a set two opener between these two couplings. No, you can’t have one on one night and the other the next. No, you can’t have China/Rider to end the first and then S/F to open the second. One ping only.

Just wanted to say thanks again for this post, Hardpan. I saw this this morning and thought of it a few times during this busy day.

Not a 1-2 Jerry Bobby combo a Jerry opener night a Bobby opener the next Not that there’s anything wrong with Alabama Greatest Story 😎
-
The one tape that I have played the most is 9/15/85, Chula Vista. Had to replace it at one point lol.
-
1 Jerry, 1 Bobby. Cold Rain Stranger I know, hard to pick just one, but let’s see what the vocal minority thinks.

So more of the games not counting? 😂 First it was Oregon shouldn’t count because it was “early”. Now a pass on Michigan because they weren’t ready? 🤣 How about too fucking bad? Michigan beat their ass and was ready. What are we supposed to say to them? I mean, I hate Michigan with the intensity of a thousand Suns, but THEY are a top 3 team. I think Georgia is. I think Alabama is. Are you playing a joke on me, or is this intended to be serious? I have an idea, it may sound familiar. I say instead of ranking teams based on recruiting rankings (done by a bunch of guys who could not get work actually coaching the game) or how they “look”, how about we actually let them play, and the results of those games matter? And not sure what difference you’re trying to clarify between Ohio State being top three and them making the playoffs? Those equate to the same thing, correct? (Same thing, get it! 😁)
