I’m fairly certain they’ll never play in Arizona again, ever. East Coast touring bias sucks balls.

Bill, I celebrated your deadication to being at the Hampton shows with the use of the thumbs-up emoji, trivial as it may be. You’re a fucking beast of a tour rat, and Garcia knows it. DD

The year got cut off in the above post — it’s 1978.

As someone who pokes fun at Bobby and the horrific tempo that he chooses to play their music at now, let me add that he is tied for first for my favorite musician of all time with Jerry and Phil. Our favorite band does not exist without him. Part of my problem is I get so excited to see any version of the GD, which I include DSO into that population, and I know what the music can be. This amplifies my disappointment when it falls short of that. Bobby is a living legend and can do whatever the fuck he wants, in my view. But as a rabid fan I feel that, on a much smaller and completely insignificant scale, I have earned the right to give my opinion. The truth is that he plays it slower because it allows him to continue to play at all. He’s a beast still, no matter how crappy some of it sounds hahaha.

Saw The Alligators and Universe Peoples last night. Both SoCal bands. The Alligators will be the house band at Skull and Roses Festival. They were a lot of fun. Front man is part Belushi, part Pigpen. I’m surprised he didn’t whip his member out at some point haha. Quite gregarious. Occasionally bangs the gong at the back of the stage. They did some Katie Mae lyrics over Minglewood Blues, which was surprisingly good. Their whole set was surprisingly good and a lot of fun. Lead guitarist was damn good. Yes, they played Alligator. Fun stuff. Universe Peoples had some good things, but didn’t gel for us so we bailed after a few tunes.

Nope. Bobby sang all of the songs he was present for. And he apparently also requested that they play everything Dead and Slow style. Videos embedded in the story linked below. https://www.jambase.com/article/bob-weir-dark-star-orchestra-san-francisco

Dharmada, did they play the songs that Bobby contributed to at the normal tempo, or were the altered at all? Thanks, and and thanks for all the lists and updates during your 4-run! We’ve enjoyed it! DD

PGA Tour, meet the modern-day hipsters.

List makes me wonder why High Time didn’t take occupy the post Drums Jerry ballad slot more often, and instead became a first set tune? I mean, other than “Jerry said so”. 😝

The only Intel I have is they’re NOT coming to Arizona, which obviously sucks balls. Will they ever return to AZ?!? Great OP though, AC. Hope we get some action round here. Someone should promote this site at the shows. We’d get new members that way.

I forgot Tangled Up In Blue, which was before the Sis and Bros. Not that anyone cares, but I’d like the Internet to be accurate 😎

JGB in Tempe last night. Two sets with John playing guitar is always good for the soul. He remains absolutely incredible. Melvin on the B3 makes for smiles all around. Rhythm section is solid. Sad that Melvin can barely get up from the bench after the show. His walking is labored to say the least. Set 1 Let’s Spend the Night Together Catfish John Money Honey Mystery Train What a Wonderful World (Sam Cooke) That’s What Love Will Make You Do New Speedway Boogie Jam Midnight Hour Set 2 Strugglin Man Cats Down Under Stars I’ll Take a Melody Feel Like Dynamite (smoking hot) Tangled Up in Blue Sisters and Brothers Deal

Be there. And yeah, sure, we’ll quote ya on the not wild part haha. 😂

Goose was in Tempe last night. Thick sound and very cool lights. They’re tight. Some songs take off. Covered Electric Avenue. Was fantastic. I recommend them as a fun evening out to anyone here.

I thought every word of this post.

K i just find some of the hyperbole a bit telling as I said, not the best one I saw that year, let alone post Hampton breakout, no argument there we had a good time with it, though Thanks, John

Heading to Fiesta Bowl now. Go Irish. Happy New Year!

Or, one could say that they’re due.

Could be a good thread if it’s own. Although not sure I have any to add to it 🙃

RudeDog, Besides HSF, which we all know is the best way to start a show, what would be your choice after that?
-
Well. Now you’ve sort of upped the ante a bit. 😃 I thought you were perhaps talking just openers still with your previous comments, to which the Rain>Shakedown are probably the strongest. The Jack Straw>Althea in Boston on 9/26 were quite good, too (although not better). But if you want to put it up against all music later that tour, you have not only the Prophet from 9/22/93 to contend with, but also the Standing on the Moon from 9/26. Both of those performances would rate stronger by any reasonable measure. Although clearly these are deep into the shows and therefore, Jerry was all lubed up by then. And having attended those MSG and Boston shows, I would comfortably add OO GDTRFB Morning Dew from 9/20/93, parts of which had Edie enhancing the mood Bucket>Bertha from 9/21 Help/Slip/Frank Bird Song from 9/22 Days Between from 9/24 to the list of songs that were extraordinary that occurred after the Rain>Shakedown>Wang Dang Doodle, CRS from 9/16 that you mention. But before I go, not so fast with the dig on the Dark Star from 9/22. Yes, it was not as well-played as the Estimated that preceded it (a pretty high bar to eclipse), and yes it was not the best Dark Star of the year (I saw three of the four played that year and it was my least favorite), it was by no means a throwaway version if for no other reason than Phil alone. Anyway, fun stuff to rehash (pun intended). Thanks for the Fall 1993 discussion!
