there are plenty of GD bands out there worth seeing live and dancing to. Very few are worth listening to via stream or recording. my local band (there are literally 20+ in the philly area) is Zendog. Don't let the name fool you- they play all GD, mostly in the style of 72-78. I find that this gives them a direction. Many bands are trying to "do their own thing" with the music and I generally does not do it for me. I'm not a purist- I believe in mutating the music. but you have to be very talented to attempt that.

Bill, you’ve gone west without informing me? What?? Have fun!!!

if I had my way, every venue would be like the Anthem. Tired of these theaters....Grateful Dead shows are meant for open spaces. Not Seats. Listen to those early 70s theater shows- they spend half the show telling folks to go back to their seats. We want to DANCE. Usually theaters at least have good sound but I found the sound to be very boomy in there. Sorry I'm all complaints. Still love DSO~

Meant to drop in here… not sure I have much to say. Not gonna break it down blow by blow….I’m no Velvet Thunder. But, yeah, really great time in ST Aug. cool town, great venue. Was down in the pit. Sound wasn’t perfect- I know it sounded better up in the seats but we were enjoying our spot down front left. Some cool new dancers that I did not know. Also saw many friends from DSO years past- Gary, Bix, Brian/Nicole, Kris/Scott, Jerry Stohner and Deb, Osean, Vince/Sue. No Torin…. Been too long my brother. Show was good. First set very high energy, no messin around. Simple twist was sweet, Run Rudolf silly. Stranger and Shakedown gettin funky. Really loved the Tomorrow Never Knows…never thought the GD did any Justice to this song, but Barraco and Lisa were really playing with it in a psychedelic way. 2 voices in the band! No offense everyone else 😜 morning Dee was perfect- par for the DSO course. Thank you!!!

I called the show in the hotel beforehand….I think we had insider info and knew it would be 69. 2-28-1969

my ability to HEAR the music is inseparable from my body's freedom to MOVE to it. So i don't care how nice a theatre is....i care about having a flat open floor to receive the music on. The music of the Grateful Dead is about Freedom; theaters are restrictive and they favor those with money. I like GA- or at least a GA floor.

my show attendance in 2023 has been abysmal. My work has taken off more this year and I often work weekends- and this was so for every would be chance to see DSO. I think before last night I saw 3 shows- Red Bank, one night of Albany, and Penn's Peak. Maybe i'm missing something else....easily the least number of shows since my earliest days of show going. Like....probably 2003. That's crazy. anyways, it worked out to make it to the Anthem, a venue that has been hyped up like crazy for a few years now. and it met the hype!! every venue should be like this. The show was great. DSO played fantastic. And to be back on the dance floor, the music moving through me was nothing short of transcendent. Yum. Got my eyes on St. Aug in Dec....

I remember seeing Walrus during Terrapin Nation sets (bring ‘Em back!). Awesome. So was there an octopus garden too or did PG mix them up?

I listened to the eyes and I have to say it sounded better than I’m used to for them. I think having Jay Lane replace Billy is a major plus- sorry Bill, but you’re old And don’t really swing like you used to.

i have a bunch of friends who are super into Phish. i've warmed to them over the years, even went to a show on the beach in AC a couple years back. I had fun...nothing particularly profound about it for me. the people i talk to who love Phish always harp on the same thing- they take the jams places the dead never did. and sure, it's true. Doesn't mean I like the places, or that they have any particular depth to me. it's all wild and crazy, party music. Long jams, yes- but if you skip ahead 10 minutes in a jam it very well may sound exactly the same. Boring jams IMO. Not at all Mutative like the GD. Not at all deep or sweet. Horrible singing IMO. Not a fan of Trey. I do like the rest of the band decently enough, esp the keyboard player. I'm happy people love Phish. I don't. I'd rather go to a SCI show anyday, however their jams are pretty boring to me too. In the realm of "jam" music the GD is enough for me. There are many other great types of music I'd rather listen to than Phish or other jambands.

Didn't DSO used to have their own ticket service, where you could order tickets NOT through Ticketmaster? My mom just bought a ticket to penn's peak. 33$...+ 15$ in fees!! that's basically half the price of the ticket. I feel so upset right now about this, its fucking crazy. Do we have to go along with this? Ticket Mafia is what they should call themselves.

LOMO looks like a good one. After night one I stayed up all night and then drove home 4 hours. Slept all day, ate dinner, slept all night. I’m beat! Thank you DSO, I always forget how good you are until I’m there. Looking forward to summer tour ~

Oh yes they did an absolutely exquisite I’ll Take a Melody Mr Charlie shape I’m in? Or one of those band songs that skips sings. The one that makes you bounce great show. Wow. I forget how good DSO is…

has anyone else other than me commented on this? or are you just busting my balls? fair game. in the words of a wise man and grate dancer....."Praise DSO"

wow, it really is dead around here (no pun intended)...so I'll say something. I went to DSO New Years in Port Chester, NY. The Cap is a highly acclaimed venue. In my experience, as someone who identifies as being a Deadhead and Dancer, is that the Venue is waaaaaay overrated. I don't even like it. Slanted GA floor? Really? And this is a venue run by Deadheads for Deadheads? Tear that floor out and put 2-3 flat tiers in. The first night I spent a fair amount of the show dancing in Garcia's. They have the soundboard feed playing at high volume and a nice, flat, wooden dance floor. Some gawkers come with the territory but we let em gawk. On NYE I stopped by Garcia's and the volume was way down. Other parts of night 1 i spent in the back, under the balcony. The 1st set closing of 1/2 Step>Franklins>TMNS was deeply excellent, definitely one of my highlights of the weekend. 2nd set was good, I especially enjoyed the rockers at the end and of course Skip killing it on the encore ( can't think of the name, a song by The Band). NYE was a different story. I was very excited to see Jeff play but was super bummed when I realized that DSO was only doing 2 sets. Been to almost every new years since 2005 and I can only think of a couple times that it wasn't 3 sets (2005 Higher ground comes to mind). The 1st set I was in my head and couldn't settle into a dance zone anywhere until Scarlet>Fire took hold. That was really good. My friends convinced me to go way down front left for 2nd set. It was actually really fun, a bit tight but it was loud and we were IN IT. somebody said to me that this night was the loudest the sound has ever been at the CAP. I believe it as my head was ringing afterwards (also a common side effect after a 69 rager.....no resolution, ya know?). Everything was going great until the ballon drop. PLEASE DO NOT DO THE BALLOONS AGAIN. FUCK THE BALLOONS. What a mess. I was swimming in balloons. I must have popped upwards of 100 and it did seemingly nothing. I had to retreat out of the pit and into the back but it felt weird there so I went back in. The Viola Lee that came out of the NYE countdown was, IMO, pretty weak by DSO standards. which is to say that I've come to expect them to climax into tearing a small hole in the space time continuum and then depositing us back on our feet. This one barely seemed to climax at all...I blame the chaos from the Balloons. FUCK THE BALLOONS. The remainder of the set was good, not great. Dupree's>the Eleven was utterly fantastic. Overall the night was good but I've had so many NYE's be 'best night ever' material and this one just didn't make it there. Maybe it was just me....who knows? Okay one more complaint. Oh Darlin>Love the One you're with has been done 3x as in Encore in the last 2 months. I saw it at Penn's Peak. It was so freakin cool that time. Then I saw that they did it in Long Island and I thought, 'hmmm, that's weird.'. now it feels totally played out. just my opinion, take it or leave it~ Thank you Dark Star Orchestra band and crew. You deliver the best product on the market and I will be back.

I would not call that a tighten up jam, however i did think they were gonna go into it
