  3. The Grey Eagle Jazz is Dead 8:10/2024 Oooooo- this was absolute a groove moving time. I just love the way Alphonso Johnson lays down a strong funky bass line. Just scrumptious. And he’d go REAL deep with those notes. Pretty wild he’s a founding member of Jazz is Dead and was in Weather Report Suite, playing with Wayne Shorter- if you haven’t seen that biopic of Shorter’s I recommend it. I rode rail first set and the whole hall was soooo quiet when they were playing- hardly a whisper!!! Savored. Kimock’s amp was turnt up and a little too much for sustained proximity. Second set- the booze kicked in and loosened audience tongues- bleh. But overall better than most crowds!! (Alcohol is evil unless it is a beautiful a work of art like Veuve Clicquot; wow, the story behind that one!! Barbe- Nicole Clicquot was a bad ass!! ) My first love is dancing forever and always; last night I shook off the grind of work and felt free. And that is priceless. such weird times Heavy energies around. Kimock’s guitar sound was quite lovely and created serene places, delicately and thoughtfully sketched out. He actually smiled some! Glad I made the trip up and back home . Nice dinner with shellfish beignets that were to die for!!! Show was about 3 hours long. Box Playin Lost Saint Terrapin Suite! HSF Stella Bertha What sounded like Fame to me-> MNS -> Fame.

  5. Jazz is Dead 8/8/2024 Lincoln Theatre, Raleigh, NC Jack Straw Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo Franklin's Tower The Eleven > Here Comes Sunshine > Crazy Fingers Bertha Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Let It Grow Terrapin Suite > Tennessee Jed I think I have this right although I feel like there was something after Tennessee Jed (even with no encore). Keep in mind, most of these songs are all 10-15+ minutes so the show was much more full than the setlist might suggest. Steve Kimock ripped it to shreds last night and the surprisingly larger crowd responded in kind. My currently iced hamstring is telling me it was an excellent time!

  6. I was a sophomore in high school. I remember my friends who went to public school talking about it right afterwards. (The Grateful Dead never came up in conversation while attending a private, catholic, all boys high school) Simply described as some big surprise concert where everyone just showed up. That was the second time I ever heard of the Grateful Dead. The first time was another neighborhood friend commenting that the Grateful Dead were coming to Philly. Musta been ‘76, after their hiatus. I remember immediately asking another friend about them. He described them as a different band whose concerts are like no other. Fast forward to fall ‘79, I go away to college. Everyone is bringing their musical influences and tastes to the dorms. I turned everyone on to Steely dan and Little Feat, bragged about loving acoustic music. So, this guy sits me down and says, if you like acoustic music, check this out, …he plays me Friend of the devil. That’s actually where it all began. I don’t remember a bus, though, but was definitely transported. Turns out my major was Grateful Dead and the classes were taught by my roommate. That’s all I learned during my short college experience.
